Originally preached on March 18, 2018

If God were looking for people who are living a godly life, would you fall into that category? Dr. Stanley highlights how Noah's character set him apart from a world filled with wickedness. Discover the three characteristics every believer should have in their life.

Sermon Outline

When we dedicate ourselves to seeking God’s favor, we stand out from the crowd. In concluding his three-part sermon series, Dr. Stanley examines what it means to live differently and explains the eternal promises God gives to those who listen, trust, and obey.

Key Passage: Genesis 6:5-9

Supporting Passages: Genesis 6:11-13; Genesis 6:22; Genesis 7:1; Genesis 8:20-22; Genesis 9:11-12; Romans 5:8; Romans 10:9; Romans 10:13

Why would God destroy the world with a flood? After creation, it took only 10 generations for wickedness to become so great that every intent of the human heart was evil. Yet one man stood apart.

► “Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord—one family, one man in all the earth.”

God’s three-fold command is: Listen, trust, and obey.

  • If you don’t listen to God, you won’t trust Him. If you don’t trust Him, you won’t obey Him. Listening, trusting, and obeying should be characteristic of every believer’s life.

Answering these questions can help you assess whether you’re applying this command:

  • Would those who know you say you listen to God?

  • Do they see evidence that you trust God by how you react in difficult situations?

  • Is your obedience to God visible in your lifestyle?

► “God put the rainbow in the sky to remind us: Whatever God promises, that’s what He’ll do.”

The experience in the ark:

  • By grace, God locked Noah and his family in.

  • They endured 40 days and nights of rain—not a drizzle, but a constant downpour—and water bursting from the earth.

  • The first thing Noah did after leaving the ark was build an altar and offer sacrifices to God.

Through the rainbow, God …

  • Established a covenant: “All flesh shall never again be cut off by the water of the flood, neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth” (Gen. 9:11).

  • Proved we can trust Him in life and death, every single day.

► “God wants to speak to you because He loves you. The cross is proof of that.”

God demonstrates His love in many ways.

  • We find it not only through the rainbow, but at the cross of Jesus.

  • God’s desire is for us to spend eternity with Him.

How can we receive the gift of salvation?

  • Salvation is available to all who confess and repent of their sins.

  • “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord ... you will be saved” (Rom. 10:9).

  • “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved” (v. 13).

After Watching

  • ;Noah’s life shows us that walking in God’s favor isn’t about perfection—it’s about consistently choosing to listen, trust, and obey. This week, reflect on which of these three comes most naturally to you. Where do you sense God inviting you to grow?

  • The rainbow reminds us that God keeps His promises. What’s one promise from Scripture that you need to hold on to right now? Write it down and return to it throughout the week, letting it strengthen your trust in God’s faithfulness.
